Support Your Local Food Bank This Holiday Season with Kraft

Many of you know that hunger is an issue near and dear to me, which is why this holiday season I am lending my voice (and time) to support Canada's food banks with Kraft's Food for Families program.  Before I left Sechelt, BC I had the opportunity to tour the Food Bank.  One thing I noticed, and has been noted, that Food banks need more than just food.  Often their facilities are lacking, as well.  Deep freezes  and more storage is vital, which is why Kraft is expanding this program to do more.

This year, $125, 000 is up for grabs for over 100 food banks in five regions across the country.  You can support your local food bank by adding your name at Kraft Food for Families once a day, every day, between now and Dec. 31, 2012.  Every time you do, Kraft will donate $.50 to that particular food bank.

$20,000 is available to each region, and once that amount is reached, whichever food bank has gathered the most signatures will receive an extra $5000.  With better storage facilities, fridges, and freezers, food banks can serve their clients more efficiently.  I was surprised when I was at the Sechelt food bank that because of their freezers and walk in fridges, the food bank was then able to store more bread, fruit, and even vegetables.  No longer did they have to give people only canned vegetables, but they could make space for donations from local gardeners and farmers.

Notes From the Cookie Jar is proud to support Food for Families, and you will see further posts from me about hunger and how to best help your food bank this holiday season.   Over the past year almost 900,000 people accessed Canada's food banks for assistance, and almost 40% of those served are children.  The holidays are a vital time for food banks as they stock up their shelves to carry them through to the months after the holidays.

No child should go hungry this holiday season.  You can change that, just by signing your name.
