Christmas Is..

  • A counter covered in flour as I roll out sweet dough, cutting it into stars and pressing a cherry into the centre before baking.
  • Curling up on the couch with a gangly 15 year old under a blanket to watch a movie.
  • Strolling through the woods hand in hand with my husband, marvelling at the beauty of the forest this time of year.
  • The colourful twinkle of Christmas lights on the trees downtown, lining the road like soldiers.
  • Phone calls with old friends.
  • A tiny tree in our living room, which has become a symbol of our commitment to return to the basics of Christmas.
  • Small gifts, chosen with care together and wrapped carefully.
  • Home made cookies and treats for our neighbours and co-workers, and the delight on their faces when we drop them off.
  • A puzzle spread on our dining room table, ready to be finished by anyone who happens to walk by.
  • Stealing gingerbread cookies from the freezer and picking off the M&Ms first.
  • Mandarine oranges, sweet and juicy.
  • A new package of socks in my stocking.
  • Fuzzy pajama pants, perfect for sitting around and drinking hot chocolate in.
  • The delight of looking out the window and in the moonlight, seeing snow softly falling.
  • Butter tarts.
  • Kevin's laughter as he and John tease each other, then their arguing as they build something.  (EVERY Christmas!)
  • Slipping extra food into the Food Bank donation box.
  • Appreciating the things that are simple; because when you think about it, they really are enough.
What is Christmas to you?
