I saw it on Twitter, and at first, didn't pay much attention. Then I became curious, and clicked over to see what was going on, and was completely BLOWN AWAY.
Two days ago The Bloggess offered to send $30 gift cards to the first 20 people who left a comment on her blog, who needed a little extra to make a nice Christmas for their children.
That one, small, tangible thing has EXPLODED. How? When the gift cards were all spoken for, someone else offered to help the 21st person. Then another offered to help the 22nd. After that, the donations just poured in for each and every commenter that needed a little boost.
At the time that I'm writing this (Sunday, Dec 18), $22,000 has been sent around America, Canada, England, Germany, Australia, and Asia to people in need by complete strangers. The stories in the comments are completely heartbreaking and yet, the love just radiating from there takes my breath away.
Go. Read. If you need help, or want to donate, it's not too late. Notes From the Cookie Jar has already signed up to be a donor.
When I talked awhile ago about taking the virtual and channeling it into the tangible, this is exactly what I meant. People who stepped up and offered something as simple as a gift card have literally MADE other's Christmases. All in the span of 3 days, starting with The Bloggess stepping up and offering her own.
THIS is what makes me so fiercely proud to be part of the blogging community.
We really CAN change the world.
