Jake often takes off to the bush to hang out in his self built lean to, and out there he builds a small fire, forages for wild food, and pretends he's surviving off the land. As far as I'm concerned, it's a fantastic pass time for a 14 year old boy. He doesn't have to go far and has taught himself all about the plants and animals of the area, so I don't worry about him too much. Sometimes he encounters bears, but the bears usually leave him alone and he knows what to do should one become aggressive. I grew up out in the bush with bears around all the time, and I tell ya-I'd rather worry about bears than peers that are drinking or doing drugs.
Sometimes, he runs into people. Most are friendly, but some older strangers seem to immediately think he's up to no good and accuse him of being one of the reckless vandals that happen to live in the area. Jake usually comes home insulted and angry.
"Can't a guy just go out in the bush and relax? Why do they think I'm doing drugs just because I'm a teenager?"
Yesterday, a Mom and little girl happened to walk by his lean-to.
Little girl (points to Jake): "Mommy! Look! There's a homeless person!"
Mom: "No sweetie, he's not homeless. He's a WILD MAN."
*snort* Wild man. Yep, that would be about right!
