The other day I was chatting with a group of teenagers, who were discussing latest movies that they want to see. Suddenly they turned and asked me if I was looking forward to any new releases at the theater.
"Oh, yes," I gushed "I can hardly wait to go see the new Star Trek movie. It looks great!!"
Blank looks suddenly surrounded me. They were trying to be polite, but was that...pity? Or, maybe they didn't even know what Star Trek is. How could someone over the age of 12 not know? Are you kidding me? One brave soul piped up nervously,
"Isn't Star Trek...um...(he was searching for the right word obviously, but gave in and used the one that came to mind first)...OLD?"
I didn't even hesitate.
"Oh the first ones are old, I mean, they were out even before I was born. But then there was The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and then Voyager, and they were wildly popular back in the 90's. We used to watch every night with the teens that lived with us, I guess you would have been...um...."
(Do the math in my head. Wait a sec. Oh, crap. You're kidding, right? Am I really about to say this?)
"..not born yet. Yes. You're right. It's old. And apparently, so am I."
