Is it cheaper to buy produce in bits only when I need it throughout the week, or better to do one big shop and risk buying too much?

I'm usually a weekly shop kinda gal. However, I'm finding that I'm wasting a lot of fruit and veggies, which is horrific considering that tomatoes alone are $2.99 a pound. Ouch! The grocery store is on the way home, so technically I'm not using any more gas or making a special trip.

Thoughts? What do you do?
