One thing about living so close to the ocean is that we can just pop on down there for a walk now and then. The beaches here might be rocky, but then they offer loads of opportunity to climb rocks, look for beach glass and check out what's hanging out in the tidal pools.
Jake found a purple starfish and in true scientist fashion, studied it to try to figure out just how it eats it's food. These are green sea urchin skeletons. When urchins die, their spines fall off and all that is left is this beautiful shell-all pinks, purples, and greens. It's rare to find one intact because they are quite delicate, but Jake found two! We brought them home. Pretty...but I have to figure out how to get rid of the dead fish smell.
Then he found a live urchin and being his brave little self, he picked up. I wouldn't pick up a sea urchin. I'd be too afraid of a spine poking my fingers. Look at the big scuba diver Momma, she's just a big wuss without her neoprene gloves and all that equipment.
I'll stick to the shore crabs, thanks.
