Ordinary Miracles

I woke up this morning to a frosty, strikingly clear day. A pretty ordinary day, really. Jake to get up and ready for school, lunches to make, and kisses goodbye.

I drove past the bank where purple and yellow crocuses are pushing their way through the soil. It was a beautful day, really. The radio was playing...

The sky knows when its time to snow
You don’t need to teach a seed to grow
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Past the view of the ocean that is always so beautiful that it takes my breath away, as seagulls swoop in the wind.

Onto work where kids were tutored in math and reading, and some, given that bit of encouragement, lit up and smiled. One threw her arms around me in a warm hug. I'm going to miss them, and my co-workers, so much.

Life is like a gift they say
Wrapped up for you everyday
Open up and find a way
To give some of your own

I stopped at one point to watch the crows, those silly scavengers, swooping down onto the school field to have their fill of the scraps the kids left behind from their morning recess. The birds seem more plentiful now, a sure sign that spring is coming.

Birds in winter have their fling
And always make it home by spring
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Jake ran to the car smiling when I picked him up after school, ready to tackle the afternoon with a project he wanted to work on in the garage. He has dreams of making jewelry and selling it to the kids in his class, as well as creating his own totem pole. Spring is in the air, and the creative energy in him is just bursting out. He has this huge log in the garage that he has been busily carving for hours at a time.

When you wake up everyday
Please don’t throw your dreams away
Hold them close to your heart
Cause we are all a part
Of the ordinary miracle

If anyone would have told me a few years ago that life would be so ordinary, that school would flow so smoothly, and we would be so happy now....I'm not sure I would have believed them. I dreamed, prayed, and hoped for things to work out like this.

Its seems so exceptional
Things just work out after all
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Now dinner has been made and eaten, the dishes washed, and we all curl up in a warm house for the evening. The evening is cool, and as I look out my kitchen window I see the twinkling lights of a far away town across the ocean. As the sun sets the colors are so beautiful against the mountains, the water sparkling and the boats dotting here and there, I can't help but catch my breath in wonder. Handy Dad joins me, squeezes my hand, and we stand there together in the crisp air marvelling at the beauty before us.

The sun comes up and shines so bright
It disappears again at night
It’s just another ordinary miracle today

As I kiss my sleeping son goodnight
Reaching to turn off his light
I thank God for all the ordinary miracles today.
