Question of the day from a child playing Scrabble:
"Is dike a word?"
My breath catches, because the spelling hasn't been revealed. Is the child asking what d-y-k-e is, or d-i-k-e? I so don't want to have to explain "dyke". Not here. Not now. Not amoungst so many other little kids. Not to a child that's not mine. SO not part of my job description.
"Um, well, d-i-k-e means a wall of dirt or cement to hold back water, sort of like a dam."
Hold my breath. Please God, let that be what this kid is asking.
"Oh good, because that's how I spelled it and I've never heard that word before."
